About the Unity Volunteer Fire Department

Unity Volunteer Fire Department, Plum Borough Station #233 is located approximately 13 miles east of Pittsburgh PA, in Allegheny County. UVFD proudly protects approximately 40,000 people in a 29 square mile area. We are one of four stations in Plum which all are volunteer. Our other stations in Plum are Station 234 (Renton), Station 235 (Logans Ferry) and Station 236 (Holiday Park).

Our services include all phases of fire suppression including Engine Company, Truck Company, Rescue Company as well as Quick Response Medical Service operations in which we assist Plum EMS.

Our district covers a large array of residential homes, businesses and farm country. Some points of interest include the Oakmont Country Club, Plum Senior High School, many elementary schools as well as several churches of all denominations. We provide coverage for the Pennsylvania Turnpike from mileposts 49 to 55 between Harmarville and Monroeville.

We at Unity VFD strive to utilize the latest safety and technology available. All of our protective gear used is NFPA compliant for Firefighting as well as our built in PASS devices which are part of the MSA MMR Extreme breathing apparatus we use. We also have (3) three Bullard Thermal Imaging Cameras.

Training remains an important part of our department for Safety thru Education. Many of our members have successfully participated and completed the Firefighter 1, Firefighter 2 and/or Fire Officer 1 program thru the Office of the State Fire Commisioner. Also within 3 years of joining our department, firefighters must complete Essentials of Firefighting, Haz Mat Operations and First Responder Medical training. We have recently hosted Basic Vehicle Rescue Awareness, Operations and Technician level classes.

From the year 1925 to present day the Unity VFD has a rich history of Public Safety for the Borough of Plum and surrounding communities.

Why the new colors?

If you notice our apparatus page, 3 of our trucks are light blue and 3 are white with gold/purple stripes. Starting in 2005 with the purchase of Truck 233 the borough started an apparatus replacement program in which they would purchase each Plum Borough FD with a new piece of apparatus every 2 years. Unity's Truck 233 was the first one to be purchased and it was agreed on with the fire chief's and borough officials that all new Plum trucks would be white with gold/purple stripes. Although each Plum dept. has a history with their own colors it is the future of combining resources and consolodating as Plum Borough Fire Dept. Unity VFD now has Truck233, Command 233 and Squad 233 painted with the new scheme.
